• Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav have called on states to take immediate action to prevent stubble burning during the ongoing paddy harvest.
• In a review meeting held at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, the ministers emphasised the need for functional machinery, affordable alternatives, and swift coordination between harvesting and rabi sowing.

Impact & Risks

Stubble burning contributes significantly to air pollution, destroying soil organisms and depleting essential nutrients. The practice also exacerbates air quality issues in the National Capital Region (NCR), particularly during the harvest season. Farmers in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and other states are directly affected, as they face challenges in managing crop residue. The rise in incidents in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan poses additional risks to air quality and public health. Without effective interventions, the situation could worsen, impacting both agricultural productivity and environmental conditions.
